We have arrived in 2018 and although most of us should already be working ahead of schedule with your content, a few of us may have let the festive period take over and thus let the content planning suffer. When you begin a new year, it’s always important as a business to assess your content marketing strategy and make any changes based on analysis of your previous year’s success.
To help you start the year afresh, and set up a content marketing strategy that will put you on track for a great year, we’ve put together a few tips.
Analyse the data
Before you begin on creating a new strategy, it’s imperative you take a look at the previous year’s strategy and the results that came with it. You should be using tools like Google Analytics on a regular basis, but the end of the year can be a good chance to really spend time analysing the data to get an idea of what worked and what didn’t.
Know your goal
Regardless of whether you work in commercial property or eCommerce, every business needs to be creating content, and every business should know the purpose of that content. Promotion is obviously key, so is increasing sales, but you might have a specific goal in mind for this year. Whether it be increasing your followers across social media or expanding your subscriber lists, have a target in mind that you can aim toward and create content around.
Work out which type of content works best for your business
Blog posts are a great way for all businesses to start when creating content, however, there are so many different types of content pieces that can be produced to suit your business. Reinvent those blog posts into a downloadable eBook, or maybe even consider setting up a weekly podcast – there are a variety of formats you can experiment with, and now is the time to decide what might work best for you and your audience.
Manage your content in one place
This could be a Google sheet that you and your team have access to, or a software such as HubSpot, whatever it is, you need to make sure you have a plan of all the content to be produced over the next year. Though you may only work a few weeks ahead, it’s vital you have somewhere you can note key dates that might result in certain content being made. This will also be a valid tool for analysing your data at the end of the year.
Don’t be afraid to edit
Though you may have a specific plan in place, don’t be afraid to change the direction if it isn’t going right. Content should always be relevant and relatable – there’s no point blogging about an outdated software, for example.
The most important things to remember when developing a content marketing strategy is to learn from your mistakes and to always know your audience.
